Ruhrzeche emerged during my artist residency in Essen. Made with earth collected from a local mining spoil heap, the works take their dark tones from the coal fragments and other residues within it. The paintings explore industrialisation through the material itself, bringing its textures and traces to the foreground. The series marks an early stage in my exploration of how past moments remain present in matter.
